What are wall safes?

Wall safes are boxes that are recessed into a wall that provides security for valuables against theft. Wall safes are typically made from thick steel string enough to withstand brute-force breaking. They may also be made of materials that offer additional protection from heat in case of a fire or explosion. Most wall safes are also airtight and designed to be resistant to dust, water and gasses.

Wall safes may use several locking mechanisms such as combination locks, digital combination locks, a key (or keys) for an outer and inner door. More sophisticated units may employ biometric security measures requiring a finger or retinal scan and time lock mechanism.

Why buy wall safes?

Many security experts say wall safes provide one of the dependable storage places for valuable documents, hard currency and jewelry. Aside from security against burglary, the right wall safe also offers protection in case of fire, flood or terrorist attacks.

Wall safes are considered even more secure than traditional safes because they can be hidden from view or placed in unsuspected locations. Wall safes can also be placed behind a painting, a shelf, a fake wall panel or false curtains. Some companies manufacture small wall safes that look identical to a standard wall power outlet for storing jewelry and money.

Traditional wall safes may be heavy and bulky but there are cases when they have been picked up and removed by a robber. This is not possible with wall safes.

Additional Information

The location of a wall safe is its first line of defense. If a thief cannot find it he or she cannot attempt to open it. The security of wall safes is also enhanced by its location. They should be mounted within a thick concrete wall or between sturdy steel studs.

Not all wall safes are fire-proof. Paper currency, important documents and other combustible valuables should be placed in wall safes that are specifically built to withstand fire. The temperature inside fire-proof wall safes must never exceed 350°F (175°C) even if external temperature reaches 1700°F (925°C) for a full hour up to 1850°F (1010°C) for two hours.

Explosion-safe wall safes offer even tighter security. These wall safes do not explode when put inside a fire at 2000°F (1095°C) for half an hour.
